Polo

Founded in 1868, The Malta Polo Club is the second oldest club in the world. The game of polo is a horseback played ball game which is one of the world’s oldest known team sports. The game is played by two opposing teams made up of four mounted riders each, with the objective of scoring using a long-handled wooden mallet to hit a small hard ball through the opposing team’s goal. The game is controlled by two umpires who are also mounted. Although the mounts are usually full sized horses they are still traditionally referred to as Polo Ponies. Each game consists of 4 chukkas lasting 7 minutes each. Players are awarded handicaps ranging form -2 to 10 depending on their ability. The Malta Polo Club events’ calendar consists of several different Cups with the biggest event being the Cawnpore Cup.
