Cherise Farrugia Wins both Prix d’Enghien & Prix de Caen

On Sunday evening two Le Trot Championship Finals were on the card – The Prix d’Enghien (Gold) and the Prix de Caen (Copper). These are two out of five finals for French trotters currently registered with the Malta Racing Club and sponsored by the French Trotting Association, which will bring to a close the first part of the local racing season. Young Cherise Farrugia managed to score a coveted double in two close and well fought out finishes. In the Prix de Caen she was partnered with her father’s horse Givre Nonantais who was starting as favourite after he had won both the heats and semi final of this competition. Incidentally Cherise had already won the Prix de Caen 2021 Winter edition with this same horse. The photo finish had to be consulted in this race which she won by just a nose from Fakir Piya – a horse which she had partnered and qualified in the semi final stage.

In the Prix d’Enghien she was driving Concerto Star owned by Jonathan Zammit and was not starting amongst the most favourite to win even though she had qualified the horse herself with a 2nd place in the semi final. Coming fast in the final straight she took her 2nd final of the day and 3rd of her career by 3/4 of a length from Havaroche.

The bespoke trophies were presented to the first five finishers in each final by Malta Racing Club’s Vice Chairman Mr Anthony Demanuele in the presence of Malta Equidrome’s CEO Dr Matthew Brincat.
